Dan Tennis : good....do you know if AOL has Hypercard to be
d/led??
AFL GeneS : Hypercard is commercial software from Apple; the
player version is bundled with new Macs. you've
got to buy the full-blown version.
Dan Tennis : so there is no commercial software here.
KPRC Kid : What is the deal with Hypercard?? What does
Hypercard do?
Dan Tennis : Scripting, sorta like presentations. Does anyone
subscribe to Compuserve or prodigy??
Alexis Kai : Compuserve.
AFL Bear : I have CIS, but gave up Prodigy.
Alexis Kai : What, AOL vs. CIS or CIS vs. Prodigy?
RocknRic : Yes AOL over CIS
Alexis Kai : I find CIS very hard to navigate through.
Dan Tennis : which do you like better Alexis?? really?? well
I haven't been here awhile, actually 14 minutes,
so I am not very familiar.
Alexis Kai : You'll get to like it.
RocknRic : Yes I agree, a lot of info, but difficult to
navigate
KPRC Kid : Can anyone give me some info on recording
sound?? :)
JSAIL4FUN : what do you wanna record from?
AFL Bear : I know a little about sound, Kid. What did you
want to know?
JSAIL4FUN : radio, or microphone?
Dan Tennis : um, well both.....
KPRC Kid : I have a built-in microphone...what capabilities
does that give me?? Also, I am interested in
recording other sounds of my own, what do I
need??
AFL Bear : What CPU, Kid?
JSAIL4FUN : what do you want to record?
KPRC Kid : Bear, I have a MAC Performa 475. JSAIL, I'm not
sure. Would like to experiment trying to get a
handle on the equipment needed.
JSAIL4FUN : if you go to the control panel program "sound"
you can record your own alert sounds, when it
asks you which one you want, pick add
KPRC Kid : I'm afraid I don't understand...do I need an
external microphone??
AFL Bear : Kid, rather then a microphone, you should try to
direct-connect to your sound source.
KPRC Kid : Ahhhh...OK, through an auxiliary hookup...
AFL Bear : That's the idea, Kid. Radio shack sells an
inexpensive attenuated patch cord that worked
well for me in the past.
Dan Tennis : hey has anyone heard about running a PowerPC on
a Mac LC III...my dad came home today and told
me about you can upgrade the LC III to a power
PC.
Alexis Kai : And you are wondering if that is a good idea?
JSAIL4FUN : what do they mean by "your own case"
Minix88739 : Dan I don't think you can upgrade a LCIII to
PPC.
AFL GeneS : Dan, there is no present upgrade from an LCIII
to Power PC
Dan Tennis : well, no I just was wondering if it was a rumor
or the truth.
Alexis Kai : Well, there's always the PDS upgrade.
AFL GeneS : There will be an upgrade for the Performa
475/476, Quadra 605 combo, however.
Dan Tennis : I dunno, that is what my dad told me, and he
works for micro center, but I dunno.
AFL GeneS : The PDS upgrade doesn't support the LCIII.
AFL GeneS : Dan: Sorry, not directly. You can upgrade the
LCIII to an LC475 which will have a PowerPC...
upgrade later this year.
Minix88739 : Gene, Do you know about upgrading a Q 605 to
PPC. MacWorld said it was and it wasn't in two
different issues.
AFL GeneS : Minix: Yes, there will be an upgrade, in the
future, not now.
Alexis Kai : 475 will be, definitely.
JSAIL4FUN : is "basic" on any of the libraries?
AFC PeterS : JSAIL - Basic what?
JSAIL4FUN : basic the language
Alexis Kai : The BASIC programming language.
AFC PeterS : You mean a BASIC programming environment?
Dunno...
JSAIL4FUN : is there any program that anyone knows about
that you can program with?
SteveVentr : Think C, Think Pascal, True Basic, MPW are all
good programming environments.
LARRY K459 : JSAIL..I never got any further than Hypercard
AFC PeterS : JSAIL - I just looked in MDV, and didn't see
anything. Why do you want to learn BASIC?
JSAIL4FUN : I dunno, just like the program
AFC PeterS : JSAIL - I think you'll need to buy a BASIC
program; I don't know which is best, as I don't
program.
SteveVentr : Pascal lends itself better when programming on
the Macintosh.
Dan Tennis : I would like to take a course or something'
about writing application programs...anyone know
of one?
AFC PeterS : Or C, or C++.
SteveVentr : Apple offers Developer University CD where are
very good, but very expensive.
Minix88739 : Jsail Try calling Borland. I remember that they
sell programming languages to students very
cheap.
SteveVentr : They are CDs in which you learn by yourself.
FrogPower : Is there ever going to be a, say, system 8 do
you think?
Alexis Kai : Rumors say it is called Copland. System 8, that
is.
JSAIL4FUN : but I have a Quadra 660 av and I think it's
plenty I don't need an 8
AFC PeterS : There's a "System 8" (Copland) in the works.
Alexis Kai : See latest issue of MacWorld.
FrogPower : Or will it just be 7.2, than 7.3, until we get
up to 7.9.9 or something ludicrous?? System 7
Pro is just basically System 7.1.1
Alexis Kai : 7.1.2->7.5->8
AFL GeneS : Frog: There will be a 7.5 this summer. Latest is
7.1.2, which ships with the Power Mac.
AFC PeterS : Does it matter what they call it, Frog?
JSAIL4FUN : what does 7.5 offer?
FrogPower : I have a performa which has system software
7.1P6. Does this mean I technically have 7.6??
JSAIL4FUN : I mean what is so great about upgrading?
FrogPower : The P stands for the Performa's specialized
system software.
FrogPower : So I take it I have 7.1.6 then??
AFC PeterS : No, Frog, you have 7.1P6. The different P
numbers just indicate which Performa the System
shipped with.
JSAIL4FUN : really
FrogPower : Can you write programs in ResEdit?
Theoretically I think it's possible!
Dan Tennis : I love ResEdit, it makes hacking our school so
easy!!
FrogPower : Steve, you mean programming in ResEdit??
AFC PeterS : ResEdit is helpful for working on aspects of a
program, but you wouldn't program in it.
SteveVentr : But you could write low level machine code with
it, sort of like programming with DEBUG on a
PC.
FrogPower : Is it possible to hack into the password for
AtEase?
Rockin Rod : At Ease came installed on my Performa, but I got
rid of it right away.
AFC PeterS : I've never worked with At Ease.
FrogPower : I HATE AT EASE! Don't you dare mention it
again?
TishTash : Speaking of At Ease, there's an easy bug that
lets anyone break the password lock. Just use
WordPerfect or any other program that accesses
the directory, and then delete the At Ease Prefs
file. I think this may have been fixed with the
latest version of AE Don't know fer shure.
FrogPower : OK Tish, what happens after that?
TishTash : Then you can exit to the Finder without having
to key in the password.
FrogPower : A way that gets past at Ease 1.0 (but not 2 or
later) is to press the Interrupt switch and type
in G FINDER
Minix88739 : Gene. Do you have Plain Talk built into your PPC
system software. Does it work any better than a
840AV
AFL GeneS : Minix: PlainTalk capability comes with the
8100/80, but not the software or microphone.
Pointoview : Can anyone recommend a program that I can use to
reprogram some of my keys?
SteveVentr : QUICKEYS from CE Software is the best.
Minix88739 : Point. I use Quickkeys 3.0. It seems to be
pretty good.
AFC PeterS : Point, what do you want to do?
Pointoview : I just had to change all of my printer quotes to
curly quotes in PM5.0. It was a pain!
AFL GeneS : There's an option to do that in PageMaker,
Pointoview.
Pointoview : I just want to do it automatically. And YES I
know Quark does it but I'm not using Quark as
yet.
TishTash : How do I get into the interrupt program on an LC
III?
SteveVentr : Programmers Key INIT, Tish.
FrogPower : Tish, try Control-shift-power key or Command-
power key
TishTash : Which is faster, a PowerPC emulator or a Quadra
800?
AFC PeterS : Q800. :)
AFL GeneS : Tish: Q800, definitely. But PowerMac is close.
Alexis Kai : Quadra 800
AFL GeneS : In some programs, anyway.
TishTash : I see.
FrogPower : Do you think I can upgrade to PowerPC? I have a
Performa 550.
Minix88739 : What would you buy right now a 040 or a new PPC?
JSAIL4FUN : i have a Quadra 660 av
AFL GeneS : Minix: PowerPC, especially if you are upgrading
from a 68030 or slower Mac.
TishTash : Is it true that the Quadra 605 is now PPC
upgradeable? By board swap or card?
AFL GeneS : Tish: It will be, but not now. Later this year.
The form of the upgrade hasn't been disclosed by
Apple yet.
TishTash : So for LC III users, one can upgrade to a LC 475
($700) and then to a PPC, for God knows what
price. Better to just buy a PPC outright, and
keep an LC III for a spare.
AFL GeneS : Tish: Better sell your LCIII and buy something
new.
FrogPower : Do you know the Mac 128 sells for $20 now? The highest recommended System Software is 5.0!!! :)
AFL Bear : LOL!
JSAIL4FUN : cool 20$!!
SteveVentr : Do they make a Power Macintosh upgrade for the
128?
FrogPower : The Macintosh Plus...ONE FULL MEGABYTE OF MEMORY
Now have the power for the most powerful
programs! LOL Steve!
Minix88739 : I have an old plus that I was running 4.2 on
until the logic board fried last year.
AFL GeneS : 1MB eh?
FrogPower : You're not serious Minix.
AFL GeneS : Minimum system size on a Power Mac is 2.1MB.
That's RAM use.
AFC PeterS : The Power Mac 1280/128. :)
AFC Carey : JSail, the Mac 128 K can't run anything...
Except the original MacWrite and MacPaint I
spose...
FrogPower : Of course, let's not forget the Mac 512KE!!!
SteveVentr : Has any one ever seen the system requirements
for a AV Macintosh with speech turned on? WOW!
AFL GeneS : Steve: My system size is approaching 7MB now,
and more without PlainTalk on a PowerMac... with
all my inits. On non-native software it soars
faster, it seems.
TishTash : I remember when 128K card for Apple IIe came
out. Everyone wondered what to do with twice
the memory.
AFC Carey : 16 Meg RAM needed just turn around :)
AFL GeneS : I loaded this puppy with RAM when I got it.
Later, Frog.
AFC Carey : PlainTalk comes with the 660 and 840 av, JSail,
as well as the PowerMac..
JSAIL4FUN : I used to have a TRS 80 talk about cheap
TishTash : And then we were shocked that you could get
double-res 16-color graphics! Whee!
AFL GeneS : Only AV PowerMacs, Carey. It's optional on the others.
JSAIL4FUN : I'll look 4 it then i might have it
TishTash : Why sell the LC III, Gene? I can't afford
anything else, and it does the job. :-D
TishTash : I would be tempted to upgrade it to a Quadra
605, since it's twice as fast.
AFC Carey : I thought that Apple unbundled the Speech stuff
from the AV and just made AV video...
AFL GeneS : That's only if you want to get something better,
Tish. It's a perfectly fine computer.
TishTash : But the LC 575 looks very interesting.
JSAIL4FUN : 610's are better for almost the same price
AFL GeneS : No, Carey. The capability is there, but not the
software or mike.
AFC PeterS : Gene - 7MB System heap? What are you, trying to
set a record? Or did you just forget...
TishTash : 610 uses what processor, JS?
AFC PeterS : ...to turn on 32-bit addressing? ;-)
AFL GeneS : It's closer to 7.5MB actually. There is no 32-
bit addressing switch on a PowerMac, Peter. And
with 40MB at hand... it would be much larger
than that. ;)
AFC PeterS : uh-oh...now I have to buy 72-pin SIMMs!
TishTash : I think it's a 33MHz vs the 25 MHz on the 605.
The 575 has a 33 MHz 040. And a tray CD-ROM!
AFL GeneS : Yes, the 575 is quite a decent little machine.
AFC Carey : Well, I found out today that I'm getting a
Newton 110 and an 8100 at work :)
AFL GeneS : Carey: The 8100 is a fab machine, to quote the
60's word.
AFC Carey : Of course I'm being shipped out of town 4 days
per week...
CopyBob : i have a new 6100, when are the Newtons coming
out
AFL GeneS : Newton is out now.
JSAIL4FUN : Does your portable have a modem?
TishTash : How are the Quadra 605 and LC 575 going to be
upgraded? Via board swap (unlikely, due to
power
AFC PeterS : Anyone heard anything about a Performa 575 yet?
CopyBob : cool, what do i do with the old
one, give it away?
Minix88739 : Gene would you recommend that I get a base
6100/60. They are about $1575 here. Will it run
FileMaker faster than my PB duo 230?
AFL GeneS : Minix: It'll be more like a Duo 270 in speed.
Minix88739 : Do you know if I can hook up a Geo. pod to a
61000 and use ARA to access data remotely?
Alexis Kai : What did it mean in MacWorld when it said
something about including Express Modem software
that... mimics a modem?
TishTash : Has Apple sorted out all the software problems
that plagued ExpressModem?
AFL GeneS : Alexis: You mean the GeoPort with Express Modem
software?
Alexis Kai : What is Express Modem anyway? I guess so.
TishTash : I like the fact that the modem is sort of
independent -- does the software-intensive
ExpressModem
AFL Bear : An Apple experiment in modems.
Alexis Kai : Does that mean you don't need a separate modem?
TishTash : Alexis, from what little I know, ExpressModem
takes a lot of the hardware stuff and packs it
into software. So the hardware
AFC Carey : A software modem... what a concept :)
TishTash : The new comm slot in the LC575 also accommodates
a soft ExpressModem.
TishTash : The first EMs were full of bugs. Apparently,
they're supposed to be better.
AFC Carey : An experiment I have to reinstall once a month
at least...
Alexis Kai : What is an Express Modem?
TishTash : Well, Alexis, all that data compression and
error correction can be shifted to software. So
the hardware is sort of a barebones modem. the
software makes it the better modem. The whole
concept was to make it cheaper and smaller, for
PowerBooks. Hope, yes, Carey.
AFC Carey : Actually, the software makes it work... or not.
TABSMAC : Is that what a Geoport telecom adapter is, Gene?
AFL GeneS : Alexis: The PowerMac uses the GeoPort to emulate
a modem. The GeoPort is the interface?
TishTash : And, as Gene states, the GeoPort, with an
adapter, can be an express modem.
Alexis Kai : Do I still need to buy a modem?
Alexis Kai : Are you saying that the computer provides its
own modem?
AFL GeneS : GeoPort emulates a modem.
TishTash : Alexis, it's half a modem, and the other half is
the software and adapter that you add to make it
a modem.
TishTash : You buy the adapter. Or buy an Express Modem if
you have a non-PPC. From Apple.
Alexis Kai : Now, let me get this straight...if I buy a
PowerMac,...and I want a modem,...all I have to
do,...is go out and buy an adapter?
TishTash : Again, any truth to PPC native Windows?
AFC Carey : Yes, Tish, SoftWindows is available as an
option.
AFL Bear : Tish, as in SoftPC Windows?
TishTash : But doesn't that run in emulation, folks?
AFL GeneS : SoftWindows is a native program that emulates
Windows/DOS.
AFC Carey : No, Tish, SoftWindows is native PPC code.
AFC Carey : And it's a LOT faster than SoftPC :)
AFL Bear : SoftWindows isn't out in its native form yet, is
it? Or did I miss that event?
TishTash : No kidding?! Wow, how's the speed?
ChuckS26 : SoftWindows runs in emulation on a PowerMac. It
runs at about the speed of 25Mhz 486
TishTash : On a 620, that >should< be like the DX2, I would
think.
